Patañjali's Ashtanga Yoga – The Eightfold Path to Liberation
Experience yoga as a complete spiritual science. Based on Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras, this course at Yoga-Samskruthi unfolds the eight limbs of yoga — from Yama and Niyama to Dhyāna and Samādhi. Students learn posture, breath, discipline, and meditation as a progressive journey from self-control to self-realization. Integrating ethical living, mindfulness, and inner transformation, this path leads beyond fitness — toward freedom (Kaivalya).
Deep Dive into the Curriculum
This course presents yoga in its original, complete form – not merely as physical exercise but as a comprehensive system for spiritual evolution articulated in Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras (compiled around 400 CE).
The Eight Limbs:
1. Yama (Ethical Restraints): Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, continence, non-possessiveness – the social and moral foundation
2. Niyama (Personal Observances): Purity, contentment, discipline, self-study, surrender to the divine – internal cultivation
3. Asana (Posture): Physical positions that create steadiness and comfort, preparing the body for meditation
4. Pranayama (Breath Control): Techniques to regulate life force (prana) through conscious breathing
5. Pratyahara (Sense Withdrawal): Learning to direct attention inward, away from external
6. Dharana (Concentration): Focusing the mind on a single point or object
7. Dhyana (Meditation): Sustained, uninterrupted flow of awareness
8. Samadhi (Absorption): The ultimate union of consciousness with its object, leading to Kaivalya (liberation)
Integration: The course emphasizes how these eight limbs work synergistically, creating a progressive path from ethical living to transcendent awareness.
Beyond Fitness: While physical benefits are acknowledged, the primary focus is spiritual—understanding yoga as technology for freedom from suffering and realization of true self.
Comprehensive Approach: Students don’t just learn techniques but understand the philosophy behind them, studying the Yoga Sutras, commentaries, and related texts that explain the nature of mind, consciousness, and spiritual transformation.
